Film Festival
The Film Festival, held a workshop for students around the island to learn, and broaden their knowledge of the filming industry. On November 10th 2011, I spent the day at this workshop where the main topics of: Filming, Editing, Make Up, Scrip Writing, Acting etc were discussed. Prior to the event I was very excited, I thought it would be very interactive and we would have the opportunity to meet celebrities.
As the day started we were sent into a room with the other participating schools and many individuals from all over the world discussed their key topic. My favorite was the acting and make-up. The acting was very interactive, and students were called to the front to demonstrate and act. It was quite entertaining and kept everyone interested. The make-up section portrayed amazing talent from make-up artists in Antigua. They even had a live model, made up as an Avatar, which was done to perfection.
At times the day was rather boring and long but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Actors such as Quinton Aaron and Bill Duke came to discuss their lives as actors and answer any questions we had, as well as give us advice. I had never seen Bill Duke before and didn’t know who he was but he was still rather interesting. I was excited to see Quinton Aaron as his film, The Blind Side was such an amazing one – I actually cried. He spoke very well and it was so sweet to hear his story and how he felt throughout the filming of the movie. I actually didn’t recognize him very well when he had first walked in but it definitely was him.
Overall, I was happy I went, I broadened my knowledge of this field and was grateful for the opportunity as I am so confused as to which direction I wish to pursue my career but filming and stage design has always been a huge interest to me. At the end of the day I took a photo with Quinton Aaron and I now have a memory forever!

CAS 18: Reflection - Spookapalooza

Spookapalooza – A Halloween Event

“Spookapalooza”, was a school Halloween fair/party organized by myself and 2 other IB students. The event was held on Friday October 21st 2011, at the Island Academy Campus. It was open to children of all ages both from Island Academy and from other schools.
The 3 of us, along with our math teacher Mrs. Irving put a lot of effort into organizing. Seeing that this was our second year hosting this event, we were a bit more relaxed – maybe too relaxed even. However we were all still busy, making signs, creating games, baking cupcakes etc. It was a lot of fun decorating and getting ready, and it built up my excitement so much more. I enjoyed every part of organizing and getting ready but just couldn’t wait for the party to start.
The party consisted of different activities for children to participate in such as: Pin the Wart on the Witch, Bone Bowling, Spider Toss, Door to Door Trick or Treating and many more child friendly interactive games. As well all these games a Halloween movie was set up for everyone to watch, there was food, drinks and baked goodies on sale, and our secondary school band even performed some of their songs for the upcoming musical. We all helped out on the night and I had a lot of fun, taking photos and helping out with the games.
Children of all ages were able to interact with each other and play with each other throughout this evening. Again, we were able to finally bring the secondary and primary school together on one evening to enjoy the Halloween holiday. As well as the main organizers, many other Island Academy Secondary students helped setting up, running games and stalls and cleaning up. Parents helped to decorate and offered many donations of needed items. We were all extremely busy on the night and at times it got very hectic trying to organize kids and run events etc. By the end of the night I think we were all exhausted!
We were very fortunate in receiving many donations of food, drinks, candy, baked goods and decorations. Everyone was dressed in his or her Halloween costumes helping to celebrate and support the event.
The night both began and ended on a good note and the turn out was better then expected. We decided to move the event outside and were praying for good weather all week, and thankfully we were blessed with no rain and a perfectly clear night. Everyone appeared to be having a great night and enjoying the wide variety of entertainment. There was lots of positive feedback and great comments. Good luck next year!
