Film Festival
The Film Festival, held a workshop for students around the island to learn, and broaden their knowledge of the filming industry. On November 10th 2011, I spent the day at this workshop where the main topics of: Filming, Editing, Make Up, Scrip Writing, Acting etc were discussed. Prior to the event I was very excited, I thought it would be very interactive and we would have the opportunity to meet celebrities.
As the day started we were sent into a room with the other participating schools and many individuals from all over the world discussed their key topic. My favorite was the acting and make-up. The acting was very interactive, and students were called to the front to demonstrate and act. It was quite entertaining and kept everyone interested. The make-up section portrayed amazing talent from make-up artists in Antigua. They even had a live model, made up as an Avatar, which was done to perfection.
At times the day was rather boring and long but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Actors such as Quinton Aaron and Bill Duke came to discuss their lives as actors and answer any questions we had, as well as give us advice. I had never seen Bill Duke before and didn’t know who he was but he was still rather interesting. I was excited to see Quinton Aaron as his film, The Blind Side was such an amazing one – I actually cried. He spoke very well and it was so sweet to hear his story and how he felt throughout the filming of the movie. I actually didn’t recognize him very well when he had first walked in but it definitely was him.
Overall, I was happy I went, I broadened my knowledge of this field and was grateful for the opportunity as I am so confused as to which direction I wish to pursue my career but filming and stage design has always been a huge interest to me. At the end of the day I took a photo with Quinton Aaron and I now have a memory forever!

CAS 18: Reflection - Spookapalooza
Spookapalooza – A Halloween Event
“Spookapalooza”, was a school Halloween fair/party organized by myself and 2 other IB students. The event was held on Friday October 21st 2011, at the Island Academy Campus. It was open to children of all ages both from Island Academy and from other schools.
The 3 of us, along with our math teacher Mrs. Irving put a lot of effort into organizing. Seeing that this was our second year hosting this event, we were a bit more relaxed – maybe too relaxed even. However we were all still busy, making signs, creating games, baking cupcakes etc. It was a lot of fun decorating and getting ready, and it built up my excitement so much more. I enjoyed every part of organizing and getting ready but just couldn’t wait for the party to start.
The party consisted of different activities for children to participate in such as: Pin the Wart on the Witch, Bone Bowling, Spider Toss, Door to Door Trick or Treating and many more child friendly interactive games. As well all these games a Halloween movie was set up for everyone to watch, there was food, drinks and baked goodies on sale, and our secondary school band even performed some of their songs for the upcoming musical. We all helped out on the night and I had a lot of fun, taking photos and helping out with the games.
Children of all ages were able to interact with each other and play with each other throughout this evening. Again, we were able to finally bring the secondary and primary school together on one evening to enjoy the Halloween holiday. As well as the main organizers, many other Island Academy Secondary students helped setting up, running games and stalls and cleaning up. Parents helped to decorate and offered many donations of needed items. We were all extremely busy on the night and at times it got very hectic trying to organize kids and run events etc. By the end of the night I think we were all exhausted!
We were very fortunate in receiving many donations of food, drinks, candy, baked goods and decorations. Everyone was dressed in his or her Halloween costumes helping to celebrate and support the event.
The night both began and ended on a good note and the turn out was better then expected. We decided to move the event outside and were praying for good weather all week, and thankfully we were blessed with no rain and a perfectly clear night. Everyone appeared to be having a great night and enjoying the wide variety of entertainment. There was lots of positive feedback and great comments. Good luck next year!

CAS 17: Reflection - Swim Meet Volunteer
Swim Meet Volunteering
On Saturday September 24th, 2011 i volunteered my services at the Antigua Swim Meet time trials competition. Before the competition i was a little unsure as to what i would be asked to do, i know nothing about swimming and only watch the swimmers while i work out in the gym. However, i was up for anything and willing to help.
The event was held at the Antigua Athletic Club and started at 10 am, i was very impressed with the timing and as i walked in there were swimmers everywhere. You could see the nerves and excitement on the faces of the children and i felt so happy for all of them, wishing them the best of luck. There were 3 main swim teams participating and the crowd was very anxious.
Due to the fact that there were many volunteers, i had little to do in the beginning. However, after about an hour or so i was asked to time the swimmers. Here i became anxious, what if i didn't press the button at the right time, or my hand slipped. I was nervous to miss calculate the time, but it all went smoothly. I spent the day in the hot sun, yes, getting sun burnt and recording times. Watching the swimmer was so inspiring, there movements were beyond impressive and some were as young as 5 years old. At times i felt bad for them as they must have been so exhausted.
I really enjoyed my day, and was more then happy i helped. Although the day was hot and long, it was worth it and i became inspired by the swimmers.

Recycling Art Project
Myself, and my three other classmates along with the guidance of our art teacher entered an art competition. The theme of the project was recycling from our beaches. We came up with the idea of creating an image of a beach using all recycled objects that we had found on the beaches in Antigua. We used a piece of cardboard that was approximately 8x6 ft, and sectioned it into 3 major areas – the sky, the sea and the sand. Using plastic bags, bottles, random toys found on the beach, and every possible form of garbage we could find we stuck them all over the cardboard.
In the 3 main sections we divided up our recycled objects. Rope and plastic bags were used for the sky to help create the shape of the clouds and the movement in the sky. Circular bottle caps and covers were used for the sea and random objects were used for the sand. It was extremely interesting and fun to do but became very annoying and boring after a while. Sticking the objects in the same places and doing the same things it was rather irritating.
Towards the end I got exciting to do the painting, and that became fun, although the paint STANK! We spent extra hours during the last week of school trying to paint everything. The painting was the hardest on the sand because all the different objects were sticking up and it was hard to get in every tiny crack. Two of my classmates got bored and stopped helping towards the end and it was me and another girl left to finish.
I was always kind of worried about how it would turn out but the final product looked amazing, the colors, the shapes, and the image itself was so fascinating and interesting to look at. As a whole it looked fantastic and it came out way better then I expected. Besides the annoying work at times I am happy we completed it so well.

Bugsy Malone
Bugsy Malone
As tradition, my school does a primary school play every year, this year the title was Bugsy Malone, the Musical. The stage was continuously full of excitement with kids between the ages of 8-12. The talent portrayed by the young students was beyond amazing and the audience was captivated by every act.
Although it was during my last 2 weeks of school, where exams were coming up and papers were due I still volunteered my time to help with the play. Having never heard of or seen the play until the day before I was extremely stressed, nervous and confused. The dress rehearsal was the worst, I had no idea who the main characters were, who needed to have a microphone and what side of the stage individuals were entering and exiting. It really was a disaster. I decided the best way to do it though was being calm and take everything one-step at a time.
My main job was to make sure all actors and actresses had microphones and that they were switched throughout scenes. In order to do so, I made a list of the microphones and where they needed to be in each scene. The stress eased as the list was a good guideline. However, the first night of the performance felt like a disaster. I based myself on one side of the stage with my partner on the other yet it was extremely stressful. I didn’t have a script and never new which scene we were on, kids didn’t know if they had to have microphones or what was going on, we were all a little clueless. Thankfully the audience never noticed our stressed.
The second night of the performance was a lot better and I had mastered my task. We did have a few mess-ups but overall it was a pretty good show. I enjoyed working backstage and the crew was very nice. I love watching the play from backstage and feeling the nerves of all the kids before they go on. It always looks like they are having so much fun and makes me want to be on stage with them – but maybe one day.
Overall, I am happy I volunteered, I carried on the stress well for the 3 long days and nights and once the audience was happy with the performance so was I. Yes, it was stressful but, no one said it was going to be easy.

Footloose Musical - CAS Reflection
It had been almost 5 years since I had participated in a school play, and I therefore felt I was not going to miss this opportunity. The Footloose Musical, was a production performed by the secondary students at Island Academy. It was an amazing final performance but took a lot of effort. The musical contained a great story line, accompanied by singing and dancing of all kind.
Practice the first day was rather nerve racking, I don’t sing, I don’t act and I don’t dance to perform. I thought this would be an interesting one, but I decided to have fun, hold my head high and try. It did turn out to be all fun, I sung as loud as I could and danced with excitement every practice and performance. It became a little hard remembering all the dance moves and all the lines to the songs but after 3 months I had it all down packed.
As well as the singing and dancing, I had a speaking part in the play, which I actually learnt a week before the performance. At times I felt Footloose was taking over my life and didn’t always want to go to practice and felt it was too much. But after our last performance I was beyond sad to see it come and go so quickly – I really miss it.
On both nights of the play, I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest! I was so nervous and so scared to mess up on a dance move or a line, as I had to speak in the first scene. However, I held myself together very well and didn’t make any mistakes. Having not been on a stage in approximately 5 years, nerves were more then normal and seeing that huge audience in front of my eyes was rather blinding.
Overall, the play was a huge success, we constantly got positive feedback and everything went as well as we could have. Everyone tried there best and put there all into it. The stage was constantly full of energy and excitement and we expressed our freedom. I really enjoyed it overall and would do it again, anytime.

Yearbook
In order to keep those priceless school memories, myself and three other IB students, along with our teacher Miss. Irving put together, created and designed our school yearbook for 2010/2011. The yearbook captures each child in the school, with a class photo, individual photos, candid’s, club photos etc and allows everyone to look back on the memories we all experienced throughout this school year.
Creating the yearbook was not always an easy task, we had deadlines to meet and at times it became very nerve racking as to whether or not we would finish in time. It was an enjoyable experience, cropping and uploading photos as well as begging students to smile for the camera. Having never used the yearbook software before, I was able to learn something new and improve my technological skills.
As a group, we started designing and creating the yearbook in September 2010, when the school year began and finished with a tight deadline of April 2nd 2011. Most of this project was fun and creative but at times it became tedious, cropping and playing around with photos and trying hard to get a good contrast with colors and layouts. There really was not any part I disliked; it was all enjoyable in its own way. I really enjoyed working on the yearbook and am very pleased with the finished product. We worked so well as a team and helped to critique each others work, overall producing a well done yearbook for the whole school to look back on.

CAS 12: Reflection - Gala Painting
Gala Painting
As an annual fundraiser for my school, the board of Island Academy host a “Gala”, also known as a fundraising ball. This event is usually held at the Curtain Bluff hotel, and is themed differently every year. Auctions are done on the night in order to raise money for the school and guest from all over are welcome to attend.
Approximately three years ago, the theme of the Gala was “Roaring 20s” and it was decided, that in order to create a more personal atmosphere during the auctions, students of the school would paint canvas’s that would then be auctioned. Our art teacher at school selected the art students she would wish to volunteer for this, and I was one of those since that first year three years ago.
This year, we were able to paint a piece of work of our choice, which did not have to relate to the theme but had to be created from our own ideas. I really enjoy working with abstract and modern art and therefore I lean towards those roads when deciding on my painting. Last year I did a painting that consisted of two canvases’ where the image started on one and finished on the other. I fell in love with my piece and was so pleased with it that this year I did a similar image however just using one canvas.
In order to complete this piece of work it took time and patience. It was a very enjoyable project but I constantly felt pressured to make it look as good as possible and I already am a huge perfectionist. I was rather nervous when starting my painting but felt a bit more comfortable knowing I had done it twice before and they had sold for relatively good prices. A lot of effort was put into this and I really enjoyed my painting in the end. As art is something I thoroughly enjoy I had no problem accepting this opportunity and I hope to continue it next year.

CAS 11: Reflection - Mural Painting
Mural Painting
The mural portrayed an amazing form of creativity and was off to such a great start there was no way it could be left unfinished! So, myself and 4 other IB students offered to team up and help Ms. Lewis complete the mural. We stayed after school on a Monday for an hour and started off painting the rest of the unfinished product. Painting was a lot of fun, we were able to put our artistic skills to work and get creative. I really enjoyed painting on such a large scale, as the mural was done on a huge wall at the side of the school. It wasn’t too difficult although being short was a bit challenging to reach the high spots. We stuck with three basic colors of yellow, blue and white preventing confusion and providing a simple but intriguing piece of work.
Painting was a major portion of the mural, however we spent multiple classes designing and organizing another image for the remaining 3 areas on the wall. As a group we came up with ideas relating to our school and island that would help portray a combined image of who we are at Island Academy. As much as this was interesting to do, I much preferred the painting and more hands on work rather then the planning. This could be because I was anxious to see the end result and get it done. We used grid paper to help measure out the images for the remaining boards, which was quite confusing to use. I stuck to the designing and painting.
Unfortunately, I was no longer able to continue this project after just a few classes as I needed to start preparing for the SAT. Therefore, I ended up coming to an abrupt stop with this project and haven’t been able to re join. Hopefully when I have completed my SAT, I will be able to continue helping with this project. However, the students that have continued are doing a great job and it is slowly coming together.

CAS 10: Upcoming Sports Day
Our school use to carry the tradition of doing both a beach and sports day in the year, however the past 2 years this tradition kind of disappeared. So therefore, myself and my class members are bringing it back better then ever! We plan to do either a beach or sports day on March 25th, or maybe even combine both. The day will consist of activities Eg- lime and spoon, obstacle courses, long distance running, short distance running, mini football games etc. This will allow all the secondary students to compete in their house teams for points, whilst enjoying themselves with some fun activities. It will be really nice to bring this back and see everyone dressed up in there crazy colors and competing and i am very excited. Hopefully the teachers participate in this and we make it a great day!
Anyway i have planning to do :) Gtg x

CAS 9: Upcoming Spring Dance
It's that lovely spring time of year again, and to celebrate the beautiful season, myself and my class are organizing a themed spring dance. The theme is still undecided we were thinking either "Little Miss and Mr. Men" or a "Hawaiian Luau". Its very exciting now, trying to decide on a theme, and decorations and make tickets etc. although can be very stressful. We have done a school dance twice before, so we pretty much have a good idea as how it will all work out, which is great as it keeps the stress level down a bit. The dance is scheduled for March 26th, so we have a good amount of time to get everything into action.
I cant wait :)

CAS 8: Footloose Musical
As a new CAS activity, i have recently started practicing for my schools performance of the Footloose Musical, which will be held in April. The practices are a lot of fun and are done twice a week. The music is great and all the dances we have learnt are really enjoyable, i feel that i am enjoying it a lot more then i thought i would and so i am always very enthusiastic. Surprisingly, there has been a large turn out of students participating in the play and everyone loves it as its just so different to our previous plays. Practice is such a great feeling and mood, everyone is having fun and supper excited. After practice we all leave school with the songs stuck in our heads and continue singing them all week - i think I'm going to be sick of them when its time for the play.
I am really happy i volunteered for this, as its such a great way to express yourself and have a good time : )
But I'm going to go over my dances now - i have practice tomorrow !

CAS 7: Valentines Dance
Last year, myself and some other Island Academy students put together a Valentines Dance in order to raise money for Haiti, after their damage in a disastrous earthquake. The dance was a success and we raised a good amount of money and therefore we decided to keep some sort of tradition running in our school and re create last years Valentines Dance this year. This upcoming week we will have a lot of work to do, organizing the location, tickets, information, decorations etc.. It will be quite stressful but we have done it before and can do it again. As much as it is stressful and nerve racking, i am very excited to start planning the dance and hoping to make it way better then last years.
